In a World gone Wild — St Andre, Multi-Seed Bread, and Pinot Noir

Enough is enough! How does a seventy six year old with a Ukrainian father, disappeared by the Soviets, a Russian/Ukrainian stepfather, born in Belgium, immigrant in America with some of the best education in the country, years with various United Nations organizations including missions in Cambodia and South Africa, then leadership in UN affiliated NGOs, one dealing with a conference led by Israelis and Palestinians in Jericho in 1995 that was stopped by the assassination of President Rabin, the other being thankful for the half-full glass, react to the world today?

Simple, she gets a great piece of winning multi-seed bread from a neighborhood baker, tops it with St Andre cheese from an inexpensive source, and accompanies it with a fantastic though not well know pinot noir from California.

Then, she writes — I write. What are we humans doing to each other and to this wonderful little planet that we have? Why are we fighting each other when we can be enriched by each other’s cultures? Why are we continuing to destroy our home, this earth, when together we could work to make it better for ourselves, our children and grandchildren, our fellow creatures and our plants?

What is the stupidity that drives us? Can’t we see that we are just specs in a universe that is either infinite or so big that we can’t even really imagine it? Can’t we feel that whatever we believe or do not believe is eyeing us in dismay? We have labelled ourselves ‘homo sapiens’, that is wise, intelligent creatures, but we are really ‘homo stultus’, foolish and silly, considering what we are facing as a result of our actions.

Isn’t it time for us to wake up from our ineptitude to control ourselves as those who have such an influence on the future of this our mother earth and see that we can do? Can’t we slowly evolve rather than regress?

As I finally raise these questions to anyone who will respond, I will make myself a strong coffee, one that brings me down to ‘reason’, to hiding what I feel and know is true.

Coffee, Armagnac and Cigar
